‘New Year – new
system’
With an ever increasing usage, we have found it
necessary to switch from an ‘inventory-based’ to a ‘user-based’ loan-tracking
system. What this means is that in future, a borrower’s contact
information etc will be entered on a registration form instead of a loan form,
& a numbered registration card will be issued. From there it’s simply
a case of entering the borrower’s registration number & the instrument ID
number on a log sheet, along with the issue & return date each time an instrument
is signed-out. Sure, it will be a bit chaotic at first – but sooooo much
easier down the line!
‘New email’
Please note: starting January 2011 our email
address for all Instrument Library business will be info@joesmill.org
‘New Library Assistant’
Recent borrowers will have noticed another face
behind the desk down at Joe’s M.I.L.L. We are currently enjoying the talents
& hard work of temporary Library Assistant, Rob, who is with us via the
Queens University Work Study program. Rob has been tirelessly toiling
throughout the Christmas holiday period to help install new databases, ID tag
instruments, & design new forms ready for ‘the big switch’ come New Year.
Thanks, Rob!
‘Flea Market
table’
Building maintenance
work down here in the basement of the Robert Meek Centre is a little behind
schedule [yes there’ll be a few more little upheavals before everything is
finally finished…] but we’re going-ahead with our ‘flea market’ table plan
anyway. This features a variety of items – surplus instruments,
accessories, books, electronics, cd’s, unclaimed ‘lost & found’ items etc –
offered for ‘sale or trade’. Come on by & check for the ‘bargains of
the week’!
‘New late
return fees’
Also as a result of the increase in M.I.L.L. usage
we need to ensure a consistent turn-over of instrument loans. To
encourage prompt returns, a late return fee of $1 per day per item will be
applied to all loans issued after Jan 1st 2011.
‘Cash
donations…every little helps!’
Our instrument inventory has expanded greatly over
the last couple of years due to generous donations from numerous individuals
& organizations - to whom we are extremely grateful! In many cases,
though, accessories such as patch cords, gig bags, reeds, etc must be purchased
before the instrument can go out to a borrower. Coupled with the
increasing cost of maintaining our approx 400 instruments in good working
order, the coffers are running a little thin. A few bucks here & a
few bucks there [& the occasional ‘loonie thru the soundhole’ in our
beat-up old collection-box guitar] goes a long way to helping make-sure there
is an instrument available for you to borrow each time you visit the
M.I.L.L. Any help in this regard will be most appreciated… [‘thanks’ in
advance…!]
