Librarian Spotlight - Jackson Baird

librarycoordinator

Jackson Baird is an experienced member of the Joe's Music Mill team, joining us when he was just 17. We asked Jackson a few question about his time at the library and his busy musical life.

Why did you decide to apply to Joes Music Mill?

I applied to volunteer during high school as I needed to meet my 40 hour community service requirement, and had heard about the MILL from my dad. It sounded like an interesting organization that provides a unique service to the Kingston region. I continued to volunteer after meeting my requirement and have remained on staff for about six years now.

What do you like about working at Joe's M.I.L.L?

I like being able to see people at different stages of their musical progression. Our borrower population ranges everywhere from small children who are just learning about music for the first time, high school and post-secondary students who need instruments for their studies, and even people who are older and have always wanted to try an instrument.

My work at the library helps these people on their musical progression, even in a small way, and that's what keeps me here.

Tell us about the music you are involved with and your interests.

I started playing classical guitar music in ninth grade at Sydenham High School, which eventually led me to the electric & bass guitar. I predominantly play the bass guitar, most notably a member of The Meringues since 2022.

I studied Music & Digital Media at St. Lawrence College, where I was exposed to a broader range of music and got to perform with a lot of talented musicians. It also gave me a better understanding of recording music with proper gear and microphone techniques.

I'm interested in playing basically any genre on the bass, but usually lean towards more experimental alternative rock music that allow me to explore weird sounds on the guitar.

What are your future plans?

I'm planning to stay in Kingston and continue working at my full-time job as well as the Joe's Music Mill, and continue working with my bands on recording new material and performing music as much as I can.

I'm also considering teaching one to one bass guitar lessons as I developed an interest in tutoring and teaching in college.
