Graham Topp first began volunteering at Joe’s Music Mill in August 2022. He is part of our always friendly and helpful Tuesday evening team.
Graham grew up in Canada and taught in China for 30 years, returning to Canada in 2021. He is a prolific composer and multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, banjo and mandolin with the band The RetroKings. He is always working on a number of musical projects. Graham and his wife Marilyn are also adventurous world travellers!
We asked Graham a few questions about his time at the library and his busy musical (and travel) life.

How did you hear about Joe’s Music Mill and why did you decide to volunteer?
We live quite close by. My wife and I happened to be going to the Juniper Cafe when I saw the MILL. Having never come across anything like it before, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I learned about the volunteer opportunities online and jumped at the chance.
What do you like about working at Joe's Music Mill?
I like meeting and advising aspiring musicians, particularly those who are just about to take the leap into guitar playing. It’s great to vicariously experience their eagerness.
I’m also lucky to be working with two wonderful colleagues. Every week we share snacks. Now that’s what volunteering is all about.
Tell us about the music you are involved with.
I’ve been playing music in one form or another for more than 50 years, so it’s something within my DNA. I do a lot of composing and recording. As mentioned, I also play with the supergroup The Retrokings. We meet weekly to relax and play music and we gig regularly. In fact, we just released our first album “The Shed Project”.
You recently returned from a trip to France. Any future travel plans?
We’ll be going somewhere with our daughters and future son-in-law for Christmas, hopefully to a warm and sunny place with happy friendly people. We’re not quite sure where yet but I’d like sand between my toes if possible.
